What a root canal actually is
Inside every tooth is a small bundle of nerves and blood vessels called the pulp. When deep decay or a crack lets bacteria reach it, the pulp can become inflamed or infected, and that's when the real pain starts. Root canal therapy removes the damaged tissue, gently cleans and disinfects the canals inside the roots, and seals them to keep bacteria out. The goal is simple: save your natural tooth instead of pulling it.
Signs you might need one
A tooth in trouble usually speaks up. Watch for a toothache that lingers or throbs, pain when you bite down, or hot-and-cold sensitivity that sticks around. Swollen or tender gums, a pimple-like bump near a tooth, or a tooth that has darkened can also point to an infected pulp. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and we catch it on a routine X-ray. An infected tooth won't heal on its own, so don't wait it out.
What to expect at your visit
Root canals have come a long way. We numb the area thoroughly before we begin, and for most patients the procedure feels much like a routine filling: some pressure, but comfortable the whole time. Working through a small opening, we clean and shape the canals, then seal them. Most root canals are finished in one or two visits. Back teeth usually get a crown afterward to stand up to chewing, crafted by premier dental labs to fit well and look natural. Nervous? Tell us — we'll go at your pace.
Aftercare and how long it lasts
Expect some tenderness for a few days; over-the-counter pain relievers usually manage it. Most people are back to their routine the next day. Until your permanent crown or filling is in place, chew on the other side. After that, treat the tooth like any other: brush twice a day, floss, and keep up with regular checkups here in Los Osos. With good care, a tooth saved by root canal therapy can last many years, often the rest of your life.
