What Is a Dental Cleaning & Exam?
Think of it as your smile's regular check-in. A hygienist gently removes the plaque and tartar that everyday brushing can't reach, then polishes your teeth until they feel smooth and fresh. Dr. Anvy Sartorius follows with a careful exam of your teeth, gums, and bite, plus an oral cancer screening. When needed, x-rays help us spot decay hiding between teeth or below the gumline. These simple steps are the foundation of prevention โ catching small concerns early, when they're easiest and least costly to treat.
How Often Should You Come In?
For most families, every six months is the sweet spot. Regular visits let us clear away tartar before it irritates your gums and catch cavities while they're still small. Some patients โ those with gum disease, braces, or certain health conditions โ benefit from more frequent cleanings, and we'll tell you honestly if that's you. It's also time to visit if you notice bleeding gums, lasting bad breath, or new sensitivity, or if it's simply been a while. No lectures here โ wherever you're starting from, you're welcome.
What to Expect at Your Visit
Expect a relaxed, unhurried appointment. We start with any needed x-rays โ quick and comfortable. Your hygienist then cleans and polishes your teeth, checking in on your comfort as they go. The exam comes next: screening for cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer, and a look at how everything fits together. Then we talk, in plain English, about what we found and what it means. Kids are always welcome at Los Osos Family Dentistry, and we work hard to make first visits feel friendly, not scary.
Aftercare and How Long It Lasts
There's no downtime after a cleaning โ you can head straight back to your day. If your gums feel a little tender, that usually settles within a day or so. How long the results last is mostly up to your home routine: brush twice a day, floss daily, and go easy on sugary snacks and drinks. Even great brushing can't remove hardened tartar, though, which is why the six-month rhythm matters. Between visits, watch for changes like bleeding gums or new sensitivity, and call us if something feels off. Prevention works best when it's steady.
Paying for Preventive Care
Preventive visits are usually the easiest dental care to budget for. Most insurance plans emphasize prevention, and many cover cleanings, exams, and routine x-rays with little or no out-of-pocket cost. If you don't have insurance, our in-house Bear Dental Membership can make regular care more affordable for individuals and families across Los Osos, Baywood Park, and Morro Bay. Either way, you'll know what to expect before treatment begins. Questions? Call (805) 528-4144 and we'll walk you through it.
