What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the entire visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. It's full-coverage protection: a sturdy shell that lets a fragile tooth get back to work. Crowns are made from durable, tooth-colored materials shaded to match your smile. Every crown we place is crafted by one of our premier lab partners, Arrowhead Dental Laboratory, Williams Dental Lab, or Burbank Dental Lab, so the fit and finish meet the standard we'd want for our own families.
When you might need a crown
Dr. Anvy Sartorius may recommend a crown when a filling alone can't do the job. Common reasons include a cracked or fractured tooth, a tooth worn flat from grinding, a large cavity or aging filling that has weakened the tooth, or a tooth that has had a root canal and needs full coverage to stay strong. Crowns also restore dental implants and anchor bridges. If a tooth twinges when you bite down, don't wait; small cracks are easier to protect early.
What to expect at your visits
Most crowns take two comfortable visits to our Los Osos office. At the first, we gently numb the area, and modern anesthetic makes it feel much like a routine filling. We shape the tooth, take impressions, and place a temporary crown while one of our partner labs crafts your permanent one. At the second visit, we check the fit, bite, and color, make any small adjustments, and cement your permanent crown in place, good as new.
Aftercare and how long crowns last
Crowned teeth like the same care as natural teeth: brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with regular checkups. Go easy on ice and hard candy, and ask about a nightguard if you grind your teeth. Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal. With good care, most crowns last 10 to 15 years, and many go well beyond that. If a crown ever feels loose or rough, call us.
Paying for your crown
Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of crown treatment, and our front office will help you understand your benefits and handle the paperwork. You'll always see a clear estimate before any work begins; that's dental health with integrity. If you don't have insurance, our in-house Bear Dental Membership savings plan can make crowns and everyday care more affordable for your family. Ready to get started?
