What minor oral surgery means
Minor oral surgery covers the small surgical procedures a family dental office handles routinely. The most common is a tooth extraction: carefully loosening and removing a tooth that's too damaged to repair. It also includes site preservation, where bone graft material is placed in the empty socket so your jaw stays strong for a future implant or bridge. Dr. Anvy Sartorius takes a conservative approach โ saving your natural tooth always comes first. If a filling or crown can save it, that's what we'll recommend.
When a tooth might need to come out
We recommend extraction only when keeping a tooth would do more harm than good. Common reasons include a tooth broken or decayed beyond repair, advanced gum disease, an infection a root canal can't resolve, a stubborn baby tooth, or crowding before orthodontic work. Some cases, like deeply impacted wisdom teeth or patients who need deeper sedation, are best handled by an oral surgeon. When that's the case, we'll say so plainly and refer you to one of the trusted local specialists we work with.
What to expect at your visit
We start with an exam and X-rays, then walk through your options in plain English โ no surprises, no pressure. On the day, we numb the area thoroughly and check that you're fully comfortable before we begin. With modern anesthetic, a simple extraction feels much like a routine filling: mostly pressure, and many patients tell us it was easier than they feared. You stay in control โ raise a hand and we pause. Anxious patients and kids get extra time and gentle pacing at our Los Osos office.
Aftercare and how long healing takes
You'll leave with gauze in place and written instructions. Job one is protecting the blood clot in the socket โ it's what starts healing. For the first few days, skip straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing, which can dislodge the clot and cause a sore spot called dry socket. Give yourself permission to hibernate for the rest of the day, stick to soft foods, and after 24 hours rinse gently with warm salt water. Most people feel normal again within a few days, and the gum closes over within a week or two. If anything worries you, just call us.
